Spider mums are chrysanthemums with long, narrow, tubular petals that radiate outward in fine strands rather than packing into a dense head. The result is a large bloom that reads as airy rather than solid — a rare combination, and the reason they appear so often in modern and Asian-influenced design.

They cover substantial area for the stem count, which makes them economical in large arrangements, and the distinctive silhouette means a few stems change the character of a design that would otherwise be all rounded forms.

Like all chrysanthemums they are exceptionally durable, commonly holding two to three weeks in the vase and tolerating transport well. The fine petals can tangle in packing, so separate stems carefully on arrival and let them relax in water before designing.
