Statice carries clusters of small, papery flowers on branching, angular stems. The texture is the point — crisp rather than soft, which gives an arrangement structure and stops blocks of rounded flowers reading as a single mass.

It is one of the best drying flowers available. Because the petals are already papery when fresh, statice keeps both its shape and most of its colour when dried, with almost no shrinkage. That makes it a staple of dried and preserved work, and a common keepsake from wedding arrangements.

Fresh, it lasts two weeks or more and needs no special conditioning beyond a clean cut. It also holds its form completely out of water, which suits buttonholes, crowns and hair pieces built ahead of time.
